Common Household Plant Bugs
White crust build up on the pot – especially on terracotta pots, glazed or natural. Sudden leaf drop – commonly in a freshly brought plant, or one that has moved location. There are occasions when a home gardener may notice a new pest, which is different to the pests they have seen in the past. Exotic pests are a concern as they could pose a threat to agriculture and the environment. Nematodes are microscopic worm-like animals that live in the soil.

This is when the wasps will be resting and easier to spray. In coastal areas of Queensland, often in gardens and plant matter. These birds are found from eastern Victoria right through the eastern coast of Australia up to Cairns.
The amazing foliage of these plants will instantly appeal. Sometimes called Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant or Rattlesnake Plant the purple, green, pink and red leaves are quite the showstopper. They’re not quite as low-maintenance as some of the other plants on this list, but with a bit of care, we really think they’ll become a favourite. Avoid direct sunlight and try to keep it somewhere with high humidity levels. These very destructive aphids are greyish green with a whitish-grey covering of wax which repels water. They multiply quickly in the crevices close to the stem making the leaves turn turn yellow.
Organic Pest Control
This large spider is brown in colour and can reach a size of up to 18 mm wide. Although not aggressive towards humans, their bite can sometimes cause illness in some people. These spiders will feed on insects, other spiders, and small lizards. Small skinks that are caught in their web will have their blood sucked dry, and their bodies will be removed from the web once the spider is finished with it. Every year we’re susceptible to all kinds of bugs, beetles, insects, and general pests.
Monitoring regularly your plants for signs of spider mite issues is a guaranteed method to keep them pest free. This way, you’ll be able to spot the signs and remove any affected leaves and branches in time. Then, treat the plant with one of the discussed methods in this post.
No matter how forgetful or neglectful you may be, if there’s one plant that can survive just about anything, it’s the snake plant. You’ll have no trouble at all in keeping this bad boy alive except for overwatering, which can be easily resolved with a soil moisture meter as mentioned above. The snake plant is fairly common and can be found in most nurseries or plant shops.
Ways To Get Rid Of Black Ants Around The House
It’s the aggressive nature of these wasps, and some people’s allergies to such stings can cause major issues. These bees are dark brown with yellow bands along their abdomen. They defend their hive aggressively and will sting those who disturb them and their hive. The sting, which is a part of the bee’s abdomen, is left in their victim.

The key to controlling Fireweed is to remove the plants before they can produce any seeds. The plants take 6-10 weeks to produce flowers once they have emerged from the ground. The adult beetles are about 10mm in length, brown in colour with a black dot on the thorax and the base of the wing covers. The adults tend to be more solitary and eat the edges of both new and old leaves leaving a scalloped pattern to the leaves. The larvae are responsible for most of the damage on the new leaves and when they feed in groups as they often do they can destroy the new growth very quickly.
They’re so small that most people mistake them for slivers, and only realise they’ve got a problem when the slivers start to move. They can range in colour from light green to white to yellow, black and brown. There are more than 7,400 species of thrips worldwide, but the most common species are greenhouse thrip, western flower thrip, and plague thrip. Thrips can be particularly insidious as they often spread plant viruses , so you can be in a position where you’re fighting a battle on two fronts. If you have any plants in your house, there’s a good chance you’re pretty proud of them.
In this case, the organically acceptable caterpillar control, Bt , would have been a much better choice as it would have not affected the beneficial predator at all. Depending on the climate and environment that you live in, you may be prone to different species of indoor plant pests. Most of these will be relatively easy to spot, as you will notice them on your plants or hovering above them. Spray infected plants with neem oil spray, which is found in seeds from the neem tree. Neem oil is organic and treats many different types of garden pest such as aphids and mealy bugs. Reapply every few days or weeks until the pests disappear.

This date is chosen to ensure that the branches are removed before any of the wasps are able to hatch. The galls need to be burnt or placed in a black plastic bag in the sun for several days to ensure the wasps have killed. Do not put them in your compost or dispose of until you have killed the adults.
When aiming for a pest-free garden, don’t forget that not all bugs are created equal. It sounds obvious but the extreme temperature from your heater can kill your plant. Most plants like a similar temperature to us so look for a place where it can enjoy ‘room temperature’. If your plant has reached a critical point where most of the leaves are gone, consider giving it some time out in your shower for a while.
You can continue this for several days until you start to notice them neutralised. If the infestation is new, let the soil of infected plants dry out completely, which kills the larvae. Be sure to water the indoor plants sparingly to avoid soggy top soil, or alternatively only water from below eg. Gently shake all the old potting mix from your plant’s roots and put the contaminated soil into the bin. Make sure you do this away from your other babes because thrip, gnats and male mealybugs can fly.
Limit these insects food sources by keeping dry goods and pet food in airtight containers. Vacuum floors regularly maintains cleanliness and eradiate such pests. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas and line dirt floors to control moisture.
Blocking off this crucial stage in their life cycle is one of the simplest and most effective ways of eliminating thrips from the hydroponic garden. Thrips are small, greenish black insects that move at lightning speed and tend to jump off your plants leaves whenever you try to look for them and as a result, they are rarely seen. Identifying thrips relies more on finding the damage they cause than seeing the insect itself. Instead of choosing plants according to aesthetical beauty or smell, consider planting a range of flowers and herbs that have an abundance of pollen and nectar.

It should not be confused with Barbarea verna, a different species, but which has similar properties. It is very attractive to cabbage white butterflies which lay their eggs on it. The larvae which hatch out and feed on the leaves, which have a high saponin content, die. So when planted in your garden, maybe even amongst your cabbages and kale, it will minimise attack on these vegetables by these nasty caterpillars. Like many pest infestations, figuring out how to get rid of mealybugs on houseplants can be tricky and prevention is better than the cure.

Eggs and Larvae will have been transported into your home via the soil around new plant seedlings, or in some cases, in infected potting mix. Once the Gnats hatch and mature, they will rapidly spread to other nearby plants and lay new eggs in the top layer of potting mix. Fungus Gnats are tiny flying insects that are common in houseplants and seriously annoying to have around. While harmless to people, they are destructive to your plants and can reach plague proportions if not addressed. These little buggers love hot, dry air and unfortunately, they love indoor plants.
Remove and destroy infected leaves and plant parts by placing in a sealed bag to prevent spreading. Easy, because a simple wipe-down will get most of them off the plant (considering they will fly/hop away), but hard because…well…they fly/hop away. BAAG’s mission is to work with and inspire home gardeners, local communities, horticulturists and landscape professionals to contribute to a healthy, biodiverse planet.
- Mealybugs are small sapsucking insects covered in a white protective wax which are usually found in protected areas.
- Their nests are usually around the soil, amongst grass, rocks, or even out in the open.
- Flies will appear in warm weather, particularly if food is present.
- Be sure to let your soil drain out between watering as having constantly damp soil can attract pests.
The diffused light in your bathroom, as well as the more moist environment could just rescue it. These tiny black beetles are oval, about 3mm in length are often found in the hibiscus flowers. They chew holes in the petals but are not believed to be responsible for holes in the leaves. If you prefer to use chemicals then once the scale is attached and feeding the most effective method of control is to use a mix of Pest Oil and Pyrethrum ie Yates Scale Gun. Smaller trees can be sprayed with a contact insecticide mixed with a wetting agent.
