Household Plant Bugs
One of the most commonly-encountered indoor plant pests is a tiny insect called a fungus gnat. It is a very small black fly that may be seen buzzing around indoor plants. The damaging part of its life cycle is its tiny maggot, which feeds on plant roots in the soil. It is most likely to be found in potting mix that’s overly wet with high levels of organic matter. The adults can be treated with fly spray or an all-purpose insecticide, but the maggots are harder to remove.

If you have a rainwater tank, take care to prevent overspray onto guttering and the roof area. If there is any risk of pesticide residue washing into the tank, you should divert the collection pipe away from the rainwater tank until after the next rainfall. You risk an unexpected and potentially dangerous chemical reaction. Mint is the perfect plant to grow if you are tight on space yet still fighting to reclaim your outdoor space from flies. Mint prefers a smaller growing space, meaning it thrives especially well in pots.

It is the easiest way to avoid overwatering and keep your plant babies content. Planted randomly through a garden, marigold smell tends to confuse flying insects!
It feels like a necessity to keep bug spray on hand, but I can’t help but be conscious of the chemicals I’m spraying into the air and onto my skin. Remove any leaves with symptoms and remove dead leaves from the surface of the potting mix – decaying leaves will often harbour fungal spores. Check the traps every few days and replace when they become covered with gnats. We sell plants by the pack, because when you buy 10 plants of one variety it’s quicker to pick and pack – saving us time and you money.

If you’re dealing with mealybugs wipe off any visible honeydew, fluff or mealies. If it’s spider mites, wipe away any mites or webbing that you can see. The same goes for fungal gnats and thrip (though these guys will usually jump/fly away). Fungal gnats are super common and have an irritating habit of hovering around your face.
Ensuring there’s enough moisture in the air around your plant is important, too. To catch crickets in mass amounts, fill a small container with lettuce and a light source such as a battery-powered torch. Leave it partially open in a cricket-prone area of your house. By the morning, you should notice a large gathering of live crickets. As they’re dark, damp and deep, gutters are an ideal place for crickets to nest.
Aphids can also spread viruses which can damage the plant. A number of natural enemies, such as ladybirds and lacewings, will provide biological control if chemical sprays are not used. Soapy water and insecticidal soaps may also reduce numbers or spray with neem, imidacloprid, acetamiprid, garlic extract or pyrethrum.
Thankfully, TikTok user Celena — a total plant guru — has shared what the leaves will look like if you’ve got a pest problem and how to stop it with a clever video. You can search on various criteria including insect name, host plant or type of damage. They’re bright and anybody who knows what they smell like could tell if you have marigolds in your garden while walking through it their eyes shut. This is because Marigolds, like Chrysanthemum’s, produce a very powerful compound called Pyrethrum, which is often used in insect repellants. This fragrant herb is well known in the cooking world, but seemingly less well known by most DIY pest controllers.

Fungal gnats are little flies with slender dark bodies and wings , and they eat – yup, you guessed it – fungi. They also feast on the organic matter in the soil and algae, which can build up in pots. They prefer temperatures between 17-25°C, which is the temperature of most Australian households. A damp plant pot in a warm home is the perfect breeding ground for fungal gnats.

Look out for moths in late spring to prevent them laying eggs on your plants again. Regularly check your plants and pick caterpillars off especially in spring. Once hornworms are removed from the host plant, they quickly die. Chuck them in your compost, or even better if you have chooks feed the caterpillars to them for extra nutrition. If you spot aphids on your plants, use the hose to blast them off.

By meticulously cleaning your pots and gardening tools after each use with either bleach or vinegar. For the best results, it is recommended to dig up weeds while they are still young and growing, if you leave them in the earth too long they will rebirth annually. In the chart below is a list of the 5 weeds you should be most worried about. It’s also important to remove dead leaves or branches to again encourage new life.
You’ll need to keep it there for a few weeks in sunny weather in order to ensure its fully cleansed. The Queensland fruit fly is about 7mm long and has a reddish brown body with yellow markings and found along Eastern states of Australia. It grows well in most soil types that are well drained and lighter textured so can be a problem in garden beds. The adult beetles are about 10mm in length, brown in colour with a black dot on the thorax and the base of the wing covers. The adults tend to be more solitary and eat the edges of both new and old leaves leaving a scalloped pattern to the leaves.
It is your responsibly to care for your plant once you receive it. We can not be held responsible for the health of you plant once it leave our greenhouse. I’ve tried everything and never thought this simple thing could get rid of fruit flies breeding in my soil so easily. I put one in every houseplant and they all gnats stuck to them; much better than having to use some type of insecticide.
Be mindful that every garden environment is different and therefore, what works for one garden may work more or less effectively in another. Flies and mosquitoes are the most common form of annoyance, and you’ll find many of the plants that deter these will also contribute to minimising other unwanted pests. Famous for its foliage and unmistakable smell, many health benefits can be derived from the leaves and oil of the eucalyptus tree. You might even want to mix the oil with water to form a spray.
Use diluted neem oil or the powdered version against spider mites. You can also trim the plant where you see evidence of pesky spider bugs. Like all pests, Spider Mite have their favourite foods and are commonly found on Calathea, Oxalis, Alocasia and many many more. These tiny pests will travel easily on warm Spring breeze so find their way into homes without issue. Once they have found a plant they will quickly breed, laying eggs on the underside of leaves.
Although there are insecticides you can buy, chemical treatments generate harmful effects on your vegetables and plants too. No matter the time of year, there are always going to be lone insects, bugs and other various creatures, which make their way into your home. “The biggest killer of indoor plants is too much love or overwatering so the key component is drainage,” Keating says. Mealy bug are tiny soft bodied insects surrounded by a fuzzy white mess around the stems and leaves.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot you can do to control this. A certain level of vigilance is required when you have houseplants to keep on top of pest issues, but nothing too crazy. Checking them over once every few weeks should do the trick – and when you start noticing changes like yellow leaves, spotting, etc, then you know to spring into action. Take any affected plants outside and give the leaves a blast with the hose to dislodge the pest. Alternatively, try putting some fresh basil leaves on the surface of the potting mix to deter this pest naturally. Replace them every few days until the white fly has disappeared.
